Noticing Nature is my way of delivering nature therapy to people of all walks of life through my mentoring programmes, courses and online resources (coming soon). I have two decades of experience of working in nature and teaching people (and dogs) how to use nature as a means of improving their health and wellbeing.
What I call "Noticing Nature" sometimes known as "Awe" walks refers to intentional and mindful walks in nature for mental health benefits, with the goal of using nature therapy to elicit feelings of awe, wonder and connectedness. Incorporating such walks into a routine and being mindful of the surrounding natural environment can have the following benefits:
Spending time in nature and experiencing awe have been linked to reduced levels of stress hormones such as cortisol. Noticing Nature walks provide a break from the demands and pressures of daily life, promoting relaxation and a sense of calm.
Noticing Nature walks can elevate mood and contribute to positive emotions of calm. Nature's beauty and vastness of natural landscapes can inspire feelings of joy, gratitude, and contentment, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Regular Noticing Nature walks have been associated with overall improved well-being. The profound experience of using nature for mental health can enhance life satisfaction and contribute to a sense of purpose and meaning in one's life.
Exposure to awe-inspiring natural environments has been linked to increased creativity. Noticing Nature walks may stimulate innovative thinking and problem-solving by encouraging individuals to see things from a broader perspective.
Noticing Nature walks foster a sense of connection, not only with the natural world but also with others. Sharing awe-inspiring moments with friends or loved ones during these walks can deepen social bonds and provide a shared positive experience.
Noticing Nature walks encourage mindfulness and being present in the moment. The immersive experience of nature prompts individuals to focus on their surroundings, fostering a sense of presence and a break from ruminative thoughts about the past or future.
Being in nature and engaging in physical activity through walks can contribute to overall physical health. Walking may indirectly support cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and contribute to a more active lifestyle.
Noticing Nature walks may help in restoring attention and reducing mental fatigue. The captivating and diverse elements of nature provide a gentle cognitive break, allowing the mind to recharge and recover from the demands of everyday tasks.
Noticing Nature walks often lead to a shift in perspective, encouraging individuals to contemplate the vastness of the universe and their place within it. This expanded worldview can foster humility and a greater appreciation for life
Experiencing awe in nature can instill a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the environment. Noticing Nature walks may contribute to a greater willingness to protect and preserve natural spaces.
Noticing Nature walks, especially when taken in the late afternoon or early evening, can help regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep quality. Exposure to natural light during the day and the calming effects of nature can positively impact sleep patterns.
Noticing Nature walks often evoke feelings of gratitude as individuals become more attuned to the beauty and wonders of the natural world. Practicing gratitude has been linked to various mental health benefits, including increased happiness and life satisfaction.
